Dodge Publishing Company
New York, 1895-1928
The Dodge Publishing Company was founded in San Francisco in 1895 as the Dodge Book and Stationary Co. It moved to 317 Broadway, New York in 1898 and later to 150 Fifth Avenue as the Dodge Publishing Company, a calendar and gift book publisher. The company was taken over in 1928 by Robert M. McBride & Co.
The Dodge Publishing Company is most famous for a series of postcards that ran in 1910 (note the Dodge10 designation) from the Titti Islands featuring actual photographs of women being cooked alive by cannibals employing different native food preparation methods. Each postcard was printed with a humorous saying, guaranteed to brighten the day of any lucky recipient back home. For example, some unknown woman is shown above simmering in a steaming cauldron with the caption, "Ahhh, I'm done for!" Who could help but be amused!
