The author poses with two pygmies. Such photos are rare because pygmies are rarely seen by outsiders. A severe drought in the area had caused them to travel far from their homeland in search of game. The author's party happened upon them as they paused by a solitary tree to examine their prize (the wife of one of the local plantation owners) with much interest. With repeated assurances that no one was going to try to free her, they finally agreed to pose for the picture. Recognizing that they were anxious to return to their village with what would probably be their first decent meal in many days, the author bid them, "Godspeed." Upon developing the photograph, to his dismay, the author realized that porter's aim with a camera was almost as poor as his aim with a gun.
